2023 RINLA PROFESSIONAL EXCELLENCE AWARDS

2023 RINLA AWARDS – Projects completed 2019-2023

Presented at RINLA Annual Meeting, Feb. 28, 2024

Excellence Awards (5)

Projects Valued > $250,000

EXCELLENCE AWARD
Katherine Field and Associates
Fen’s Edge

The scope of the design includes a new pool and integrated spa, a kitchen and cutting garden, Zen garden, custom outdoor fireplace, custom outdoor shower, a Corten installation, stone walls, entry posts and plaques, and overall site lighting and planting.

Projects Valued > $250,000

EXCELLENCE AWARD
Landscape Creations of Rhode Island
Made for the Outdoors, Phase 2

This phase includes the construction of a sports court and spectator area, sledding hill, vegetable garden, apple orchard, and nature trail with edible plants. The build-out also features several custom benches, terraces, pathways, and ramps to ensure multi-generational enjoyment.

Projects Valued > $250,000

EXCELLENCE AWARD
Landscape Creations Of Rhode Island
Coastal Family Oasis

Gardens and limestone pavers create inviting pathways to the back of the home and connect to outdoor patios and a range of amenities including a pool, firepit, and custom pergola with an outdoor kitchen and dining area, all of which create an oasis for generations to enjoy.

Projects Valued > $50,000 to $250,000

EXCELLENCE AWARD
Shalvey Bros. Landscape
Amaral Residence

Project goals were to minimize the lawn area and revegetate much of the cleared site using a blend of native and ornamental plantings, including over 20,000 square feet of wildflower meadows, which also serve as a solution for drainage challenges on the site.

Projects Valued > $50,000 to $250,000

EXCELLENCE AWARD
Shalvey Bros. Landscape
Bonvouloir Residence

Strict lot coverage constraints, storm water management requirements, and significant elevation changes were primary challenges on this site. The large footprint of the house led to creative selections with driveway and patio materials so they were all permeable.

Honor Awards (9)

Projects Valued > $250,000

HONOR AWARD
KP Designs
Historic Newport Home

The homeowners asked for a pool and spa, plenty of pool patio space, and a putting green. CRMC required two rain gardens and dictated the setback for the landscaping work. The 40’ x 15’ pool with integral spa is nestled into a space just off the guest house.

Projects Valued > $250,000

HONOR AWARD
Landscape Creations of Rhode Island
Paradise Found

The primary challenge was to enhance the site for clients who are horticulturists at heart, while preserving the native ecosystems. The hardscape and lawn were substantially rethought to include English gardens, a new poolside chimney, and beautiful stone walls that repurpose salvaged stone from a portion of the home’s demolished foundation.

Projects Valued > $250,000

HONOR AWARD
Shalvey Bros. Landscape
Rutherford Residence

While the site provided elevation challenges, it also provided the solution − lots and lots of boulders.  Utilizing these boulders onsite, tiered retaining walls not only retain the elevations but also to set the stage for some stunning planting areas with a multitude of different plant materials that work with the scale of the site.

Projects Valued > $250,000

HONOR AWARD
O’Connor Design Build
Brook Woods

A stone terrace was designed off the back of the home to offer same-level entertaining, which included a sitting area, firepit, and dining area with a pergola. An important component of the design was keeping in with the natural surroundings and to have a natural approach to the plant design.

Projects Valued > $250,000

HONOR AWARD
Aquidneck Landworks
Coastal Hideaway

This project features interior and exterior masonry elements, which include 16’-6” x 32’ (5’ depth), negative edge gunite swimming pool and 8’x8’ gunite spa.

Projects Valued > $50,000 to $250,000

HONOR AWARD
O’Connor Design Build
Old Beach Oasis

At the front of the home, large grade changes provided an opportunity to install a stone retaining wall that very closely matched the original brownstone walls along the front of the property. From the expansive pool deck patio a natural stair path leads down through a boulder wall.

Projects Valued > $50,000 to $250,000

HONOR AWARD
Shalvey Bros. Landscape
Giusti Residence

Initially, the biggest challenge was all of the existing elevations. From the in-ground pool, to the basement access, to the deck sliders, and even the garage access, they all contributed to the framework of this project.

Projects Valued > $50,000 to $250,000

HONOR AWARD
Shalvey Bros. Landscape
Pomeranz Residence

Over 8 feet of elevation change from the driveway to the back yard posed challenges for access and storm water management. The pool features a jetted sun shelf, waterfall wall, and of course lighting at night.

Projects Valued < $50,000

HONOR AWARD
O’Connor Design Build
Home on Hamilton

Stone walls became the driver of this design, which incorporates a serpentine wall along the driveway. The lawn and drainage were improved and regraded and a rain/shade garden was added to capture water runoff adjacent to a wetland.

Merit Awards (4)

Projects Valued > $50,000 to $250,000

MERIT AWARD
Aquidneck Landworks
Poolside Villa

This pool restoration project includes 900 square feet of porcelain paving with 14” thick bluestone pool coping. Perennials and shrubs fill the garden beds and low voltage uprights and path lights illuminate the space at nighttime.

Projects Valued > $50,000 to $250,000

MERIT AWARD
Shalvey Bros. Landscape
Power Residence

A formal front landing and step feature symmetrical planters on either side. Three colors of brick pavers were hand-blended for the driveway. The back landings and steps blend seamlessly into the bluestone patio and step wall, which outlines the planting bed and ties into the stepping path.

Pool chairs in front of pool
Projects Valued > $50,000 to $250,000

MERIT AWARD
Aquidneck Landworks
Island View

This project was a challenging feat with a sloped landscape where it was necessary for native fieldstone walls to encapsulate the entire site and elevate areas to create terraces into multiple entertaining spaces.  The pool terrace is set on 300 square feet of thermal bluestone paving.

Projects Valued < $50,000

MERIT AWARD
Aquidneck Landworks
Eastside Escape

This project features a 500-square-foot walkway using concrete paver panels, which were poured to replace the cracked sidewalk enhancing the front walk and overall curb appeal.  The planting goal was to incorporate native plants encouraging pollinators into the garden and creating an escape within the city’s landscape.
